2014 mercedes-benz e-class review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Redesigned, substantially revised, in a wide range of models. introductionthe 2014 mercedes-benz e-class comes with a new edgy look, available in many models and iterations. Mercedes counts 11 of them, down to anti-glare continuous high-beam headlamps. because the e-class competes with the cadillac cts and audi a5, it needs to be pretty, and the new face of the 2014 e-class brings it alive. The interior is cleaned up for 2014 as well. over two days in oregon, we drove the 2014 mercedes-benz e250 bluetec sedan, e350 cabriolet, e550 cabriolet, e400 hybrid sport sedan, and e350 4matic wagon. Each has something special to offer. The black paint and brown leather upholstery had something to do with that. the new e-class is more dynamic, improved to the eye from every angle. Mercedes calls it elegant and poised, and it is that, but it's aggressive too. The front end is especially sporty, while character lines on the sides are cleaner. The tweaks keep mercedes moving from old man's car to muscle car. the e350 with the v6 makes 302 horsepower, 273 foot-pounds of torque, and accelerates from zero to 60 in 6. 1 seconds. The e550 with the v8 makes 402 hp and 443 ft-lb, and takes 4. 9 seconds. We prefer the v6 because it's smooth, plenty fast, and more efficient. there's also a 2. 1-liter turbodiesel that makes 195 horsepower with a robust 369 lb-ft of torque, and comes standard with 4matic all-wheel drive; we got 40. 6 miles per gallon driving on two-lanes and freeway. The diesel makes more sense than the v6 hybrid, which delivered just 29. 8 mpg. We got 25. 0 mpg in the v8-powered e550. The diesel is slower than the hybrid but more responsive. all the e-class models come standard with the eco stop/start system, which shuts the engine off when the car stops. The mercedes system is less intrusive than the bmw system. in two days of driving different e-class models, we have no big bad notes, only little ones. Transmission: check. Just know what to expect in acceleration, and get a good feel for the transmission, and the rest is turn-key, in buying a mercedes. the interior is less changed than the exterior. The dashboard is smoother, every inch soft touch, with new two-piece trim in three woods. Changes on the instrument panel for 2014 include a new cluster with nice off-white gauges, and sleeker air vents with an analog clock between them. The seats are a bit different in the models. In the cabriolets they're recaro-like, with tight ribbed leather. as for the active safety enhancements, there's a whole lotta assisting going on here. We have collision prevention assist, parking assist, steering assist, lane-keeping assist, cross-traffic assist, rear-end collision assist, pedestrian recognition assist, and last but not least attention assist. Just kidding. we wonder if some of this assistance might take us into the land of unintended consequences. We'll wait for top gear to take a safety-optioned e-class and drive it toward a brick wall at 30 mph with another one on its tail, to see what happens. There are three super-high-performance e63 amg models. standard equipment on the e350 coupe and cabriolet, e550 coupe and cabriolet, and e350 4matic coupe includes every power thing imaginable. New standard equipment includes eco start/stop. safety equipment standard on all models includes 10 airbags, active head restraints, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, rollover sensor, rearview camera, and tire pressure monitor. New standard safety equipment includes collision prevention assist, attention assist, and led headlamps and taillights. Optional equipment includes full led lighting, surround view camera, and parking assist. The driver assistance package includes steering assist, lane-keeping assist, cross-traffic assist, rear-end collision assist, and pedestrian recognition assist. walkaroundthe new 2014 e-class looks way more dynamic than the 2013. It's edgy and sporty now, especially in the front end. The new face might be faulted for being less smooth than it might, but it brings the e-class alive. the led headlamps are bigger and sleeker for 2014, and the grille is bigger and blacker, with only two bars and the big benz star moved into the center. But it's the amg models, with wide flowing faux air intakes in each corner and a wide horizontal dam below the bumper, that make the e look like it's trying to be a mustang. Mercedes prefers to say the styling forms a visual link to the brand's high-performance sports car models. This describes the sport trim, not luxury, which is less changed, with the star still a hood ornament. Sport places the three-pointed star on the grille. the character lines on the sides are smoother now, with gently rising shoulder lines to the trunk lid, under windows unbroken by b-pillars. Horizontal led taillamps widen the view from the rear. Overall it's elegant, dynamic and poised, says mercedes, and we agree. interiorthe interior is less changed for 2014. Gone is the gear selector lever on two-door e-class, making room for storage and big cupholders. It makes sense to create usable space when mechanically possible. Shifting is back to the future, with a lever on the right side of the steering column. Mercedes says there are virtually unlimited possibilities for individual configuration of exterior and interior colors. Changes on the instrument panel include a new cluster with nice off-white gauges, and sleeker air vents with an analog clock between them. Set the heated seats on low, never get a chill. The aircap wind deflector over the windshield rises at 25 mph, and reduces cabin turbulence mostly in the back seat. Another wind deflector between the headrests rises when the rear seatbelts are snapped. the e-class cabriolet is the quietest soft top in its class, after careful development with high acoustic standards. It looks handsome in pictures. the seats are a bit different in the models. It's a common reflection to see in cars at times, but on this day it seemed like the vents were painted in the window. 2014 bmw 4 series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New 4 series replaces 3 series coupes. introductionit's the dawn of a new era. Previously part of the venerable 3 series lineup, bmw's compact sports coupe has been spun off as the 4 series, an all-new two door with lower, wider proportions, ample power and the bevvy of technology that bmw is known for. Transmission choices include a 6-speed manual or an 8-speed automatic; all-wheel-drive bmw 428i xdrive models come with the automatic only. According to bmw, the 428i can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 5. 7 seconds with either transmission on rwd models, or just 5. 6 seconds with all-wheel drive. as with many new vehicles, the automatic transmission used on the 4 series surpasses the manual gearbox when it comes to efficiency. Fuel economy estimates for the bmw 428i are an epa-estimated 22/34 mpg city/highway with the 6-speed manual, 23/35 mpg city/highway with the automatic on rwd models. Fuel economy for bmw 428i xdrive dips slightly to 22/33 mpg city/highway with its awd and automatic. most powerful is the bmw 435i, with a turbocharged 3. 0-liter inline-6 that makes 302 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, two horses more powerful but five pound-feet less than the 335i. Transmission choices are the same 6-speed manual or 8-speed auto. Not only is bmw's 8-speed automatic more efficient; it's also quicker. A bmw 435i equipped with the auto achieves a quick 0-60 mph time of 5 seconds flat. There was talk of a 450-hp twin-turbocharged inline-6 and body panels made of lightweight aluminum and carbon fiber. for 2014, bmw is including its emergency crash notification system, bmw assist ecall, on all its models, along with 10 years of service. interior materials in the 2014 bmw 4 series are similar to those found on the 3 series, though the 4 series cabin design is clearly more driver-oriented. Standalone options include leather upholstery 1,450), heated front seats 500), navigation 2,150), harman kardon surround audio system 875) and a variety of wheel options. safety features standard on all 4 series include front-impact airbags that deploy at different rates depending on the severity of impact, front passenger side-impact airbags, full-cabin, curtain-type head protection airbags, abs, stability control, traction control and bmw assist ecall crash notification system. Safety options include a driver assistance package 950) with a rearview camera and park distance control. The driver assistance plus package 1,900) adds side and top view cameras plus several active safety features like blind spot detection, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, pedestrian warning and collision mitigation. All-wheel drive can improve handling stability on slippery surfaces. walkaroundthe styling of the bmw 4 series is more evolutionary than revolutionary, and is clearly recognizable as a 3 series coupe successor. like other bmw models, the 4 series comes in a choice of lines: standard, luxury, sport and m sport. Each gets unique exterior trim, interior trim and wheels. bmw 4 series coupes are wider and sit lower than the 3 series sedans, giving them a bolder, more aggressive stance. The front fascia closely resembles the latest 3 series, but it is not identical. Viewed from straight on, the coupe has a more flowing, aerodynamic appearance. The signature bmw twin kidney grille is ever-so-slightly lower and wider, flowing into headlamp housings that stretch back and wrap around into the front fender. Double-bezel headlamps are ringed and more pronounced, giving it that bmw angel eyes look. Foglamp housings are swoopier and a bit more accentuated. from the side, the silhouette is lower and sleeker, with a curvier, sharper sloping roofline. Short front overhangs leave very little weight hanging over the front axle. A distinctive body crease runs from behind the front wheel, through the door handle, and tapers off over the rear wheel. Side windows are shorter and more stretched back, and a sharper version of bmw's distinctive curve, known as the hofmeister kink, forms the tail end of the side rear windows. also setting the 4 series apart is the side air breather, a vertical vent located on each side behind the front wheel arch that channels air from the engine compartment down the sides of the car for reduced drag. standard wheels on the 428i are 17-inch alloys, while 435i models get 18-inch wheels. Designs vary depending on trim line. in the rear, the shorter back window is evident. Tail lamps look like slightly flattened versions of those found on the 3 series. The rear bumper is more horizontal and uses straight, rather than upwardly curved lines out to the rear fenders. Double exhaust tips remain together on the left side; we would have loved to see one pipe on each side, perhaps integrated into the rear bumper. interiorthe interior design of the 2014 bmw 4 series is clearly more driver-oriented than that of the 3 series. The center stack is slightly canted to the left, and a high, tapered dividing line just to the right of the gearshift cordons off the driver in her own little cocoon. Behind the shifter (and just below the center stack) is a shallow storage tray, which lifts out to reveal two standard-sized cupholders. We think this is an awkward design, since there is no designated place for the tray to go when the cupholders are being used. Up top is the idrive screen, with two air vents below. The 2014 mercedes-benz s-class has a soft-spoken style but boasts technology unheard of when the previous s-class arrived as a 2007 model. essentially, the new 2014 s-class has more of everything. Leaving alone for a moment the sumptuous perforated-leather seats, the rear-seat legroom that would accommodate a stretched-out lebron james, the illusion that the windshield actually seems to widen out toward the top, well, there's the extraordinary safety systems and sophisticated electronics built into this iconic automobile. the 2014 s-class deserves a doctorate as a study in automotive technology and safety features. It is stuffed with sensors, surrounded by cameras and radar, and it can sense rough roads, pedestrians and other cars in its path, predict collisions and initiate braking. Data are collected by a stereoscopic camera able to see a 3d view of the environment up to 50 meters ahead and sense the spatial position and movements of objects ahead of the vehicle. mercedes calls all of these sci-fy-ish systems intelligent drive. Some of the components are standard, such as collision prevent assist and magic vision control. Others, while others such as the driver assistance package and magic body control are options. the latter is worth a special mention. While the standard s-class receives a pretty good air suspension, magic body control employs the stereo camera to detect irregularities in the road surface ahead, and to automatically adjust the hydraulic suspension damping to a softer mode in a fraction of a second. The system works at speeds of up to 80 mph. Goodbye, bumps. the curvaceous interior is welcoming to all occupants, with fine leather and threads and a wraparound sweep to the cockpit. The firmed-up air suspension dismisses potholes with a soft thump (we only found one pothole in canada), and rough tarmac is history thanks to the optional magic body control system. Occasionally at lower speeds in traffic, we felt an awkward little bark from the transmission as its settles into what's usually the appropriate gear, thanks to the dual-clutch. steering feel is light and neutral, as we'd expect in this class.
